Brother Kevin Dismas's Story

Dear Friends and Classmates; It is hard to believe that it has been over forty three years since we all left High School and have gone out to change the world, I think of all of you often and keep you in my prayers for His presence and peace in your journeys. I always look back fondly on my time in High School and my many friends that I made there. The two event that has stood out in my journey was as was yearbook editor my junior year at Frankfurt in 1972 and chairing one of the two senior class trips in 1973. Our trip went to Palma de Mallorca Spain, an island off the southern coast of Spain in the Mediterranean, for a week in April of 1973, I believe a good time was had by all. Currently a Brother in the Friars of the Sick Poor of Los Angeles CA, serving the poor, sick and marginalized in Los Angeles County as a Urban Interfaith Chaplain at the LA County University of Southern California Medical Center, 2011 - 2014 worked for LA County Youth Detention assisting 12-17 year old boys and girls with group therapy support sessions. Lived in Guadalajara Mexico from May through July of 2014 with the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit for a immersion in spanish to provided spiritual care to the spanish speaking sick and poor of LA. Much of my work is as a grief councilor and end of life palliative care chaplain to the dying and their families I have lived a very full life, met my wife in Washington DC in 1975 while we were both stationed at Naval Regional Medical Center in Bethesda MD. I was at the end of my first tour with the Navy and attending Seminary with The Holy Cross Order at Catholic University, but met Catherine and fell madly in love. We were married in 1976 for thirty-one years, we have three children and seven grand children. I lost Catherine seven years ago to a rare type of cancer (it says in scripture that the two shall be come as one, I miss her deeply every day of my life and look forward to the day I will see her again). I have been a member of the Order Franciscan Secular as a lay person for over ten years and In my journeys. During a trip to Europe I felt the call of God while traveling in Assisi Italy. I came to a decision with the support and approval of my children to work for God full time. This is where my inner joy and peace comes from! For the first two years after Catherine's death I was a Capuchin Franciscan Friar on the East Coast working with and for the homeless in Philadelphia, but found I wanted to be closer to my children and grand children in Phoenix AZ. So I requested permission to change religious communities and moved to Los Angeles CA, and here I am. I retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the US Navy in 1993 as nationally board certified laboratory technician, owned a laboratory with fourteen employees and 170 accounts in three states, after that I owned a consulting company in the food manufacturing industry and traveled around the world putting in quality assurance operating systems. My wife was a Captain/Colonel USPHS Nurse NP and a member of the Rapid Ready Response Team for the Department of Health and Human Services out of Washington DC. She was a awesome person, wife, best friend and soulmate. Catherine was in the process of completing her Doctorate in Nursing and had three Master degrees under her belt. She loved working with the elderly and children and had a very deep faith life. y lives and our desire to catch up on their journey. Some of you I have not been in contact with but have thought of you often and have kept you in my prayers for God™s love and presence. Over the past few years I have been living in Los Angeles, California and re-entered religious life as a Friar of the Sick Poor (you can Google us on our website). Our Mother House is in Long Beach and the unique part of this community is that we are allowed to live alone because of our fourth vow of self sufficiency. This past year I completed my fourth unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in May at Los Angeles County / University of Southern California Medical Center. This has giving me a grand total of twenty six hundred hours of both class room and clinical time as a chaplain, with an additional four hundred hours as a palliative care chaplain. My last unit of CPE was with the recovering gangs at Homeboy Industries in downtown LA. This past summer I traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico for two and a half months to do an immersion in Spanish with the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit and then returned to Phoenix to have back surgery to repair damage from a fall down a flight of steps two years ago. I was able to spend a month on the east coast visiting family and friends in October. Late November I completed my training and certification as a Grief Recovery Specialist in Los Angeles and then headed home to Phoenix to be with my children and grandchildren for Thanksgiving. Upon returning to California I began my ministry at Brother Benno Foundation in Oceanside, California with the homeless population providing day care services and finished the background check and requirements to receive my credentials as a youth detention volunteer for Los Angeles County Probation Department. On March 8, 2015 I will make my first vow in my religious community at St Marcellinis in Commerce California. This is a small Spanish parish that I taught adult faith formation and confirmation class at during my time in LA. I was able to form a close relationship and bond with both the staff and parish community. I will continue to hold each of you in my thoughts and prayers in the upcoming year and may we all be found every ready to tell them the reason for our hope which is the love of Jesus Christ in each and every one of our daily lives. Yours in the love our Lord Jesus Christ Br Kevin Dismas Moshier fsp Dear Friends and Family / Christmas 2015 I prayer this letter finds all of you in good health and in our Lords care and love. This past year has been very busy, Traveled to University of Michigan in Lansing for a National Conference (as a staff member), for the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow, a program with in the Boy Scouting program with over 15,000 youth. Then a week on a silent retreat at a Trappist Monastery in Gethsemani Kentucky. After returning to Oceanside I add to my ministry work, working with the a program and dealing with military members with medical issues related to PTS and suicide reduction at Camp Pendleton Marine Corp Base in Oceanside California, also providing grief recovery class's at the Franciscan Mission San Luis Rey, also assisting as a member of the retreat program on staff. I will continue to hold each of you in my thoughts and prayers in the upcoming year and may we all be found every ready to tell them the reason for our hope which is the love of Jesus Christ in each and every one of our daily lives.
